Stem Cell Therapy Now Available at Capital Region Special Surgery

October 24, 2016

Edward H. Scheid, Jr. , MD, FAANS is a board-certified Neurosurgeon who specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery and is first in the Capital District to offer stem cell therapies. He is committed to providing patients with the most effective, innovative and comprehensive treatments available for their back pain.

There are many types of invasive treatments for back pain. Some can be quite effective but none of them actually repair the damaged disc. Significant progress has been made in  experimental stem cell treatments that can actually heal the damage that has been done to the disc, restoring it to its original condition. This allows the disc to repair itself so it can rebuild its normal structure.

What To Expect with the AST procedure:

The AST procedure usually takes twenty minutes and is performed within the office setting. Bone marrow, containing stem cells is extracted from the patient’s hip. The stem cells are then injected into the patient’s damaged disc using the guidance of an x-ray. Patients are usually allowed to go home and recover 30 minutes after the procedure is finished.

Patients often experience a lessening of back pain and restoration of the degeneration in the disc over the next few months to a year. Many experience significant relief from their back pain and improved quality of life.

AST is an excellent alternative to traditional surgery for patients who want to maintain an active lifestyle and whose discs have not degenerated to the point where there is no other option but surgery.

Before you consider surgery, ask if you’re candidate for non-surgical REGENERATIVE DISC THERAPY at Capital Region Special Surgery.
