John Fitzpatrick
 10 years old

One perfectly normal day after school, my Dad came over to say Hi, and see how everyone was doing...or so I thought.  On this particular day I was very hyper and happy.  Also, on this particular day there would be a moment that would change my life.  When my Dad walked in I was bouncing off the walls.  My Dad told me that he wanted to talk to me for a minute.  I had a very hard time sitting still. When I realized that my Dad didn't look very happy I said:  "What's wrong Daddy?"  After what seemed like fifty-years of hesitation, he said:  "I have cancer."  It 's like I suddenly ran out of fuel.  I sat still staring at my Dad like he had five heads.  I was speechless.  My Father sat waiting for a reply.  When I finally came back to earth, all I could say was:  "Why?"

After almost a year of chemo therapy and radiation treatments, he had recovered from tonsil cancer.  Over the course of that year I had to overcome many obstacles.  I could barely see my Dad for the whole year.  Almost every other day, he had to drive to New York City to get some kind of treatment.  But, finally in the beginning of winter of 2005, he had recovered.

I am running in the CRSS Race for Hope for my dad and my family.
