Grant funds ranging from $8,000 to $10,000 were given to C.R. Wood Cancer Center at Glens Falls Hospital, Ellis Hospital Foundation, Inc., Ronal McDonald House Charities and Saratoga Hospital—Mollie Wilmot Radiation Oncology Center.  Funding came from the CRSS Race for Hope fund.

Since 2009, Capital Region Special Surgery has raised more than $175,000 to provide grant funding to help uninsured or under-insured Capital Region patients affected by brain, neck and head cancer. CRSS raises money for the Race for Hope Fund through annual 5K races, with all overhead and administrative costs covered by CRSS.

“In 2009, recognizing an increasing need for patient and family support services, we established the Capital Region Special Surgery Race for Hope Fund,” explains Dr. Edward Scheid Jr., MD, president of Capital Region Special Surgery.  “This fund provides financial support for a variety of support programs and services focusing on improving the patients’ physical and emotional needs during treatment for brain, head and neck cancer.”

“We’re proud to work with Capital Region Special Surgery’s Race for Hope Fund by providing careful stewardship of grant funds and assistance with selecting recipient organizations,” said Karen Bilowith, President and CEO for the Community Foundation. “Through this partnership, we help ensure that grants are not only made to have the greatest impact possible, but also that funds are maintained in order to be available well into the future.”

This year marks the 5th year that Capital Region Special Surgery will be hosting their Race for Hope.  The 5K run/walk will take place on Saturday, September 28, 2013.  Registration is currently open as well as opportunities for corporate teams/sponsorship and on-site vendors.  Contact Race Director, SarahNicole Mahoney at 518-441-8570 or smahoney@capitalregionspecialsurgery.com.
